Our client is a midsized trading company in downtown Calgary, connected to a large international oil and gas company.

Overview:

Reporting to the Manager, NG Capability Americas (based in Calgary), the Power & Carbon Originator will drive business development in Alberta’s carbon and electricity markets. This role focuses on originating, structuring, and executing deals, with a strong emphasis on market expertise, client relationship management, and hands-on deal execution. The ideal candidate will combine strategic thinking with practical skills to expand our footprint in environmental commodities and power trading.

Fridays are optional work remote.

Key Responsibilities:

Market Origination & Deal Execution

  • Identify, develop, and execute commercial opportunities in Alberta’s carbon offset markets (e.g., TIER, CCIR) and power markets (focus Alberta) including renewables, conventional electricity, batteries.   Role focus split is ~70% power, ~30% carbon
  • Lead end-to-end deal origination, including structuring transactions, negotiating term sheets, and managing counterparty relationships.
  • Collaborate with traders and analysts to optimize pricing, risk, and profitability of transactions.

Regulatory & Market Expertise

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of Alberta’s carbon pricing policies, emissions trading systems, and electricity market regulations.
  • Monitor emerging trends (e.g., decarbonization initiatives, renewable energy mandates) to identify growth opportunities.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build and manage relationships with counterparties (e.g., industrial emitters, renewable developers, utilities).
  • Lead counterparty onboarding processes, including credit assessments and KYC compliance.

Analytical & Strategic Support

  • Conduct market research and financial analysis to evaluate deal economics and competitive positioning.
  • Systems skills
    • Proficient Excel skill is a required
    • Automation/programming tools such as Python/Sequel are considered an asset
  • Prepare presentations and reports for internal stakeholders and external clients.

Post-Trade & Compliance

  • Oversee post-trade activities, including reconciliation, settlement, and regulatory reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with DOA, environmental commodity certification standards and market rules.  

Requirements:

  • Degree or Master’s degree in Economics, Business, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related fields
  • 15+ years in the industry including 3+ years of power origination; carbon origination experience preferred as well
  • Proven track record in deal origination, structuring, and execution (e.g., carbon offset agreements, PPAs, RECs).
  • Strong understanding of carbon compliance frameworks (TIER, CCIR) and electricity market dynamics (AESO, power pool).
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel; familiarity with SQL, Python, or R for data analysis/modeling is a plus.
  • Trading and origination software Pioneer and EnTrade experience nice to have
  • Certifications such as CFA, CPA and/or coursework in sustainability/energy markets, are advantageous.
