Overview
Our client is a Calgary-founded prestigious professional services firm with a 60-year history in Canada. With 105 employees over 3 offices, annual revenues are $25-30MM. Staff work in office 4 days/week; the fifth day can be remote.

The practice is presently structured as a partnership of corporations which are owned by individual management companies. Financial statement compilation and tax preparation/filing of the partnership are done in-house. They follow Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).

The Role

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for providing financial and operational leadership to the firm in a manner that supports the achievement of strategic, operational, and financial goals and objectives.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to: overseeing transactional accounting functions, preparation of monthly financial reporting packages, and project analysis. Secondary responsibilities include insurance and legal review of contracts and proposals. The person in this role is experienced with financial statement compilation and can work independently with little supervision. The individual also has experience with project accounting and analyzing project management metrics. Software experience with Deltek Ajera is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong and effective financial leadership and counsel to all principals, project managers, and other technical staff. Through monthly financial packages, interact with project managers to educate them on the financial state of their projects.
  • Produce all aspects of financial reporting including the billing reports, monthly accrual reports, monthly financial packages, quarterly and annual reports, and statements to the Management Committee and financial institutions. Ensure financial statements fairly present the financial position of the company and the results of its operations.
  • Budgeting, forecasting, planning.
  • Ensure the consistent application of accounting policies across all offices taking into consideration jurisdictional requirements.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate internal checks and controls to ensure the accuracy of information and the existence of appropriate safeguards to protect the company’s assets.
  • Ensure all bank requirements, including the line of credit and quarterly compliance reporting, are managed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ensure that all income tax planning, compliance and filing of returns is completed.
  • Develop and manage infrastructure to support a timely and accurate handling of Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable.
  • Earn supervisory duties of AR, AP, and other administrators.

Requirements

  • CPA with public accounting experience
  • Industry experience; ideal would be a professional services/consulting firm
  • Strong ASPE
  • Strong preference for revenue-generating project accounting experience (can be from accounting firm)
