Our client is a specialized private merchant bank that provides corporate financing, expertise and some direct operations management. Client offerings include oilfield services, procurement services, renewable power, agriculture, pipelines. They are relatively small and offer the opportunity to create new processes and improve/automate others, be involved directly in client operations, and learn from the founder who has 30 years of successfully targeting speciality niches.

Responsibilities

The Staff Accountant will be a critical part of the Company’s Finance team with primary responsibility for supporting the Assistant Controller, Calgary in the day to day accounting and operational functions across a diverse set of operating subsidiaries and investment partnerships.
The Staff Accountant will:
• Prepare cash reconciliations, budgets and working capital forecasts across multiple business units and structures.
• Maintain Accounts Payable and Receivable sub-ledgers and have primary responsibility for monitoring payment cycle and ensuring efficient processing.
• Reconcile monthly bank and credit card transactions across various company entities
• Initiate approval and payment workflows, maintaining vendor database and wire instructions across all business entities.
• Manage intercompany transactions, including intercompany account reconciliations.
• Oversee and design supporting documentation packages and record retention polices and develop best in class policies (i.e. wire support packets, bank reconciliation process, purchase/sales documentation, etc.)
• Other ad-hoc reporting projects and clerical duties such as filing, scanning and attaching support to the accounting system.
• Assist in preparation of Canadian tax returns and informational filings (i.e. GST, sales, etc.)
• Assist in preparation of Management and Investor reporting packages combining official accounting books with budgets/forecasts and project tracking information.
• Support the annual audit process including assisting in the preparation of working papers and other supporting documentation.
• Assist with creating and updating internal controls, policies and procedures.

Requirements

• 2-5 years of relevant experience in accounting/operations or related field.
• Ability to provide scale and implement efficiencies within a fast-growing company with a diverse set of subsidiary businesses.
• Ability to maintain master files and chart of accounts.
• Ability to perform month-end closings, and update FX rates within GP Dynamics.
• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP and Encore preferred
• Strong understanding of US GAAP and IFRS reporting preferred
• Experiences recording FX and intercompany transactions preferred
• Skilled in use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Advanced Excel experience with VBA programming or other skills a major plus
