Project Controller

Oil & Gas Engineering and Services


Our client is a private, medium sized O&G engineering and services company based in Cochrane with other offices across in Canada and one in the US.  In support of their continued growth, this new role, which can be based either in the Cochrane or Calgary (with meetings in Cochrane once per week) office, will work with and between the finance and operations teams and report to the Corporate Controller. The Project Controller is responsible for the financial integrity of the company’s projects, roughly 20-30 projects at once. This includes management of day-to-day accounting administration, cost reporting, audit participation, as well as staff mentoring and training.


  • Provide information and reporting to project management and operations as required
  • Strategic planning, project budget reviews and risk analysis with upper management
  • Preparation of monthly cost and profitability reporting as well as other ad hoc analysis and reporting as required
  • In depth understanding of contract/PO requirements for billing
  • Ensure that LEM (labour, equipment, materials), invoices and progress claims are properly prepared and submitted to the client in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assist with and/or prepare invoicing on complex projects
  • Reconciliation of WIP (work in progress)
  • Recognize revenue on cost plus and lump sum projects
  • Assist with payment collections as needed
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with contract terms
  • Ensure compliance to provincial and federal regulations
  • Assist with external audit process by providing information and documentation as required
  • Other duties as required


  • Degree in Commerce or Business Administration, with a major in Accounting preferred
  • Preference for working towards or completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Designation
  • Minimum 7-10 years progressively responsible and applicable accounting and revenue-generating project experience, including revenue recognition, WIP, POs, understanding impacts on financial statements
  • Experience in a multi-service and -currency environment an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including leaders, all staff, contractors, clients and equivalent peer group/contacts
  • Ability to deal with change and manage deadlines with a solution focused attitude
  • Outstanding written, verbal and professional communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to apply professional judgement and to prioritize tasks in a high volume workload
  • Strong Excel skillset
  • Experience with BST software an asset

No direct reports, but person expected to provide mentoring to, and potential future supervision of, Project Controls Team (non-accountants doing mostly costing, reporting to Project Managers in Operations) and Billing team.

Role is 100% in-office with some occasional flexibility to work remote, e.g., sick kids, weather.
