Our client is a medium sized public company, head officed in Calgary.  Currently there is a need to add a Controller, this is a permanent role reporting to the CFO.      

Responsibilities

The Controller will be responsible for managing the internal and external financial reporting and accounting practices. The Controller will supervise the activities of the Financial Reporting and Operations Accounting staff to ensure that all accounting and financial reporting activities are effective, timely and accurate; and in accordance with IFRS reporting standards. The Controller will have direct reporting responsibilities for supervise a staff of 4 people, and a total finance group of 14, most of whom are located in Calgary corporate office.

Accountabilities/Functional Duties
• Provide leadership, mentorship, assistance and day-to-day coordination and guidance to the Finance Management team and their staff including goal setting, career development, project management, task prioritization and succession planning.
• Liaison to the executive team to ensure alignment of priorities and quality of the finance team work product is meeting the standards and expectations of company executives.
• Coordination and review of internal (Business Unit specific) financial statements including the timely completion of variance reporting and fixed vs. variable cost analysis.
• Review of external disclosure and reporting materials (MD&A, Financial Statement & Notes, Audit Committee documents)
• Ownership of the Company budgeting and forecast process (weekly, monthly, quarterly and long term).
• Review monthly financial statements and results with operations management
• Review adequacy of accruals, journal entries, accounts receivable aging
• Ownership of the Company AR/Collections functions. Include decisions around legal proceedings with customers with AR balances of concern.
• Ensure maintenance of appropriate accounting systems, procedures and controls to monitor operational performance and safeguard the Company’s assets
• Develop and maintain a business partner relationship, and facilitate open communication, with finance, operations and field accounting personnel
• Liaise with external auditors
• Provide leadership to and participate in special projects (e.g. software development initiatives, updates and conversions, business unit specific initiatives)
• Special projects as required

Requirements

• CPA designation required
• 15 years of post designation experience 
• 10 years of leadership experience
• past experience dealing with public company reporting
• Experience dealing with operational staff
• Experience advising senior executives
